Testing What You Hear

Three filters that protect you without paralyzing you. The goal is discernment, not fear.

Three filters. The goal is discernment, not fear.

Filter 1: Does it align with Scripture?

God will not contradict himself. Fear, shame, and condemnation are not his voice — Romans 8:1. If what you're hearing tears you down without pointing toward restoration, it is not from him.

Filter 2: Does it reflect God's character?

God convicts but does not condemn. He corrects but builds up. Ask: does this sound like the father who ran in Luke 15? Does it lead toward love, truth, and restoration?

Filter 3: What do trusted people say?

Bring significant things to someone further down the road. Community confirms, clarifies, or redirects. Not social media — trusted, mature, grounded people who hold what you share carefully.

The fruit test.

Over time, what does acting on this produce? Fruit takes time. Give it time.

When you're not sure.

Hold it loosely. Bring it back to God. Give it time. Watch for convergence from other directions.

Perfection is not the goal. Developing a track record is. Keep showing up.

If what you're hearing is dominated by fear, shame, or condemnation — even after applying these filters — that pattern is worth paying attention to. A wound or a lie underneath can color everything before it reaches your conscious mind. Heart Care was built to help you get to the source. Heart Care →
